How to Setup Your Recent Posts and Recent Comments Blogger Page Elements

In order to enable the Recent Posts and Recent Comments page elements in your recently downloaded Blogger template, you need to follow a couple simple steps.

These lists aren’t going to show up when you first install the template so we’re going to bring them to life now. They are actually both RSS Feed widgets so we’ll need to paste in your feed and comment rss feeds to make them work.

Let’s start with the Recent Posts page element so click to edit it. Then paste in your RSS feed url which will most likely be in this format https://YOURSITE.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default . Make sure to replace “YOURSITE” with your actual blog url.

recent-posts-feed.gif

There’s no need to change the title (unless you want to call it something else) so then hit “Save Changes”. Then save your blogger layout and go over to your other browser window, refresh and see the Recent Posts appear in your blog’s sidebar.

Now you’re going to do the exact same thing with the “Recent Comments” page element but you’ll instead use this feed format https://YOURSITE.blogspot.com/feeds/comments/default . Again, make sure to replace “YOURSITE” with your actual blog url. Save and make sure it’s working properly. If it doesn’t appear on your blog, chances are you don’t have the correct feed url or you might not have any comments yet.

If you really want to fine tune your Recent Posts and Comments settings like increasing the max number displayed to 10 you can. Go read our advanced recent posts settings article and take your widgets to another level.

Justin on Feb 23, 2008, 4:30 pm

what if I have a dot.com address, not a blogspot. What is my feed address?

David on Feb 23, 2008, 6:40 pm

Justin, it should be something like this
http://www.YOUR-URL.com/feeds/posts/default

Another way to find out is to scroll down to the bottom of your blogger page and look for the “Subscribe to: Posts (Atom)” link and copy that url.

don on Feb 27, 2008, 1:33 am

is there a way to display more than the max of 5 recent posts? is there a way to tweak the code?

David on Feb 27, 2008, 7:27 pm

don, I think so but I’m still trying to test it. Try adding this to your feed url: ?max-results=10
The url should then look something like: http://YOURURL.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default/?max-results=10

Hi,

I tryed the recent post thing with my older blog and it worked but with the newer one, it shows me that the URL is invalid. What do you think may be causing this problem?

I also tried adding the ?alt=rss (or whatever like that) but that doesn’t work either!

Hello,

When I configure this recent post and recent comment, I got invalid URL. Why ? I have double check and it is correct.

Ethan on Mar 30, 2008, 8:15 pm

Update : My error exactly same as Ashutosh Mishra

David on Mar 31, 2008, 2:17 am

Ethan & Ashutosh, That’s really strange since it’s always been working for me as well. Blogger must have changed something to prevent it from working anymore. You might want to check out their Help Group and see if any solution has been posted there.

sasa, there seems to be a bug with Blogger on this. Others have also have had similar problems. I’m not sure the Blogger staff even knows about this.

Is there any way to get a code like this working on old blogger templates that don’t have widgets?

camille on May 9, 2008, 3:15 pm

Thanks for the nature’s charm template. I really love it. I can’t seem to get the tabs to work. What can I do? I’m extremely new at this sort of thing. Thanks.

David on May 11, 2008, 7:31 pm

@camille, make sure to check the “Expand widget templates” checkbox on the “edit html” blogger page. Then search the template for
<li><a href="#" accesskey="2" title="">Info</a></li>
<li><a href="#" accesskey="3" title="">Photos</a></li>
<li><a href="#" accesskey="4" title="">About</a></li>
<li><a href="#" accesskey="5" title="">Contact</a></li>

That’s where you change the links.

Tony on Jun 5, 2008, 5:51 pm

Hey David,

The recent posts widget still displays posts that I have deleted. Is there a way for it to know to only show the recent posts that still exist.

Also, when I try to change the rss feed url to end with /default?alt=rss it then eliminates the deleted posts form the widget but will not update to show the any new posts I create.

Any help would be great,

Thanks

Everyday Finance on Jun 8, 2008, 7:32 pm

HELP!! Please. 😳

I’m just about through transitioning all my information, blogroll, widgets etc to this new wonderful template and now the oddest thing is happening. The little wrench appears at the bottom right of every html box, etc. even when logged out of blogger (i.e., now every visitor can see this icon which should only be visible when editing in Blogger as a logged-in owner). Any ideas? I’m not sure if this has anything to do with the template, but I’ve never come across this before and I’d hate to have to switch to a lousy google standard again. Thanks to anyone that can help!

bekbek on Aug 27, 2008, 12:31 pm

Like Everyday Finance (see previous comments), for some reason I’m getting the little wrench icon on two of my widgets (Archives and Recent Posts), showing on the page itself. They show even if I am logged off –i.e. they show for everybody, not just me.

Any idea how to correct?

Steph on Aug 28, 2008, 9:49 am

Hey everyone, you can bypass the “invalid URL” issue with the recent post feeds by using this link instead:

http://www.YOUR-URL.com/feeds/posts/default

Works like a charm.

Mr. Wellhead on Dec 17, 2008, 4:27 am

David.

It does not work at my site for the code recent comment. The result is the recent post up to 5, after i put recent comment code (http://YOURSITE.blogspot.com/feeds/comments/default).

You could check it at my sidebar for the title recent comment at this URL: http://crude-oil-futures.blogspot.com

Mr. Wellhead on Dec 17, 2008, 4:38 am

Dear David.

My problem about the recent code in okey now since i change the feed address by using this feed:

http://crude-oil-futures.blogspot.com/feeds/comments/default?alt=atom&callback=showrecentcomments

and your feed code as the article how to build recent comment is this:

http://YOURSITE.blogspot.com/feeds/comments/default

So please update the post david. Thanks you.

Do this web offer forum david?

Your sincerely;
http://crude-oil-futures.blogspot.com
Mr. Wellhead

Oliver on Dec 21, 2008, 12:05 pm

To the people who have trouble on non-updating ‘recent posts’ widget.

If you have a feedburner url, copy/paste that instead of your default feed url. This will not only give updated recent posts but will also un-include your deleted posts.

Hope this helps.
