Improve Your Google Rankings in One Easy Step

seo your websiteHaving a top rank in Google is the holy grail for anyone who has a website. Organic Google traffic is free advertising and how most bloggers (especially those just starting out) achieve visitors and traffic to their site. It all comes down to a simple numbers game. Essentially, more traffic = more money-making opportunities from your blog. The question is, how do you get ranked higher for my blog posts using Blogger?

Before I tell you how, let me give you a quick lesson is search engine optimization (aka SEO). There are two main components: “off-page” and “on-page” optimization. “Off-page” SEO refers to tactics such as link building. The more websites that point their links to your blog/website, the better. It’s a democratic way of showing Google that your site must be important if lots of people are pointing to it. Even more important with “off-page” inbound links is the actual link text (anchor text) that is used to point to your site.

Here’s my proof. If you search Google for the term “click here” you’ll see that Adobe Reader and Apple’s Quicktime software are in the top 3 results. Why? Because so many other sites are linking to these two sites with “click here” as the anchor text to download their software. That’s the power of “off-page” SEO which you as a blogger can’t do much about besides writing such great unique content that generates lots of links.

So with “on-page” SEO you have complete control over how well you’re optimized for Google. This includes keywords in your post titles, title tags, using header tags (h1, h2) and other tactics. Now the one we’re going to focus on in this article is the blog title tag.

Title tags are one of the most (if not the most) important “on-page” elements to ranking high in Google. Search engines such as Google weigh the importance of each word in the title from left to right. So ideally you want your blog post title all the way to the left and your actual blog name to the right. Below is a perfect example of how this should look. You can also check out our Premium Revolution Template which is currently using this technique as well.

blogger seo title

Blogger templates by default don’t come with search engine optimized (SEO) title tags meaning you aren’t maximizing your blog to rank better in Google. If you take a look at your existing Blogger title you’ll see that blogger displays the blog name first then followed by your post title. They have it backwards so let’s get your blog setup properly.

We’re going to have to make a quick edit to your Blogger template which might intimidate some of you but it’s very small and painless. All I ask you to do first is to backup your template just in case you make a boo boo. That makes it easy to revert back without much headache.

Step #1

In your Blogger dashboard, go to “Layout” => “Edit HTML”.

Step #2

In the template code, do a search for this: <title><data:blog.pageTitle/></title>. It’s usually in the first 5-10 lines of code in your template near the top.

Step #3

Replace that bit of code with the following code:
<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == &quot;index&quot;'>
<title><data:blog.title/></title>
<b:else/>
<title><data:blog.pageName/> | <data:blog.title/></title>
</b:if>

Step #4

Save your template and go back to your blog. Click into any individual post and look at the page title.

All your blogger posts are now much better optimized to rank higher in Google. I’m not going to promise you a night and day difference but you’ve taken a step in the right direction. Now just go post unique high quality content so people searching Google will find your blog first!

Right, I tried this about a year ago, it didn’t seem to work, left a comment which David never answered and – because I’d clicked the email follow-ups -have spent a year getting eMails from people (most of whom) seem to have the same lack of luck I had.

At no time has anyone come up with screen-shots/captures to show us a before & after of what it should look like, what we should be doing and where everything should start from or end up, and for some time now I’ve been thinking this page is just a ‘traffic’ scam.

Then – this week – the very helpful ‘Paul Corcoran’ turned up, had the same problem as the rest of us and fixed it! Not only fixed it but told us to put other bits of code elsewhere!! Only he links to what appears to be a scam blog, cleverly disguised as an anti-scam blog! However, as I pointed out to him…

…”another sign of a good scam is a blog with one post, no comments and 20 links to ‘Shaun Smith’…

not to mention the dead you-tube links, due to ‘misuse’

So I dug deeper and I think we’ve all been very nieve. The code is/may be at best useless, or at worst has added to our spam and/or re-directed traffic/earnings to this (or other?) blogs/pages.

What both ‘David’ (this page) and ‘Paul’ have in fact done is register their ‘blog’ as the title of their first article, and then only have the one article!!!!! Clever – no ‘older posts’ means you can’t compare two pages on the same blog/website.

If you don’t believe me (and I’m a rank amature when it comes to the internet and HTML/XHTML), just right-click a blank area of the page, left-click on ‘view page source’ and compare it to yours.

I’m lucky, I only changed some of my blogs, so I can copy the original text back to the ones I changed. If you can’t do that and didn’t save the original, find a new bloggers page and use their virgin script to repair your template.

I’ve reported Shaun ‘Smith’ and his $700 a day to blogger, but can’t report this – it’s not on blogger (that was the elephant in the room we all missed!!). However…if I’m wrong; Perhaps David will stop ignoring all those who have had problems and come and explain exactly how this is supposed to work????

Paul Corcoran on Feb 14, 2010, 1:41 am

Ok Hugh, i only tried to help here when i found this site. Then i get a fool like you defaming my character!
I know a little about how HTML works, so i experimented a little to find out where best to put the code for better blog rankings on Google, as it says it does it this article.
The OTHER code I put into MY OWN BLOG should’nt concern you. it’s only there as new widgets for advertising or stat counting on the site.
I DO NOT tell anyone to put EXTRA code anywhere on thier own blog or sites.
What i did, was place the code just under where it says:
[CDATA[/*
instead of just replacing;

This works! look at my blog above to prove this.
All the Best.
Paul

Paul Corcoran on Feb 14, 2010, 1:51 am

Actually Hugh, I’ll be GLAD to do you screen shots page capture (printscreen) for you to show what this actually does for your blog, it CANNOT do damage or send potential earnings elsewhere, as it’s only VERY BASIC HTLM. Paranoid or WHAT??

Again Best of Luck

Paul Corcoran on Feb 14, 2010, 4:21 am

Right Hugh

I’ve done a screen capture in MS Word!
If you want it you can so long as you RETRACT your earlier post about me!

Contact me at

pauldubz@hotmail.com

Hugh Walter on Feb 14, 2010, 5:37 am

I’m not going to retract anything! To quote from my original post…

“didn’t seem…” (not IS or WAS)
“most of whom…” (not ALL)
“seem…” (not IS or WAS)
“what appears to be (not IS)
“I think…” (I don’t KNOW)
“may be…” (not IS)
“if I’m wrong…” (Which I may be!)

I threw up a theory for dissemination after following this post/web page for a year or more and observing the owners disinterest in the lack of success of people subscribing to the central idea, one of whom, I was.

So stop crying like a baby. Your blogs are all one page/one post ‘Gordon Gecko’ sales vehicles, the coding in 3 (above) is not present in your ‘page source’ and the link you sent me shows you public page, well if you look at any public page URL the ‘.blogger’ comes after the individuals blog name, so it proves nothing!?

You stink of snake-oil and most of my comments remain valid and open to real rebutal. Still all this whingeing will get a few more clicks to your risible sites won’t it?

Hugh Walter on Feb 14, 2010, 5:50 am

You see it’s full of ad-links, I almost wasn’t allowed to publish it, I think I’ll cut and paste all this and start a new blog!!!!!…..?

Paul Corcoran on Feb 14, 2010, 6:20 am

Semantics my man, does you NO favours.

You sound like a Bitter man to me. Maybe you were ripped off by someone? I don’t know.

I was honestly trying to help by coming here,
but please yourself. I think i showed the HOW of this article, even if the author did not!

I do not know the author, but it seems to me that if this works,then you have nothing more to say on the matter.

As for the “Geko” reference, I am an affiliate, and pretty new to it. But let me see if i can get this straight;

You sell items from your blog, which makes you a shop keeper, i sell other peoples items from a variety of blogs/shops, which would make me an agent/affiliate.

Your silly “Snake oil” statement just sounds like you’ve been had over quite badly and are looking for a target to spit your bullets at!??

My sites may not be fabulous like yours obviously are but “Risible” is a bit strong, considering i am getting into blogging for profit, (as are you) not for the love of my fellow man.

By the way, i can blog about anything i like! I do NOT need to explain myself you you.

As for your insulting attitude, save it for someone who cares what you think mate.

Paul Corcoran on Feb 14, 2010, 6:32 am

Click View Source, the above code is there between lines 24 and 28, are you blind????????

I use it so it works the way it’s meant to work.

Give me strength.

Hugh Walter on Feb 14, 2010, 7:09 am

“My man!…just bring the motor round the side my man, and don’t tell the wife”!

It may not be scamming, you proberly prefer the term ‘Sales Technique’, but it’s taking peoples trust and abuseing it. The code may be there now but it’s doing nothing…there’s some fluff that sounds clever but it doesn’t actually tell us what’s going to happen or how, and inserting the code has no effect, has HAD no disernible effect on…what…at least half the commenters and may not have done anything for the rest (see; MAY)? Lets have an explanation for laymen, not a load of geeky salespeak.

However, it drives traffic, and when you pop up here being all helpful, it drives traffic to you, where we find that the only link on your learn serbo-croat in five minues page leads us strait back here!!!! So we can guess who’s affiliate you are? [something I hinted at in my first post]

My blogs are homespun waffle, and the few adsence I have, will – at the current rate – earn me a cheque in about ten years, if it arrives at Christmas it’ll be useful!

I’m nothing like you with your ‘techniques’ – you see, it’s all in the semantics.

Sheila on Jun 18, 2009, 3:09 pm

@rich01- I tried your code and it worked the other one did not. So what I don’t understand is, why is the person with this blog, his code does not work, yet blogger with comment, gives a code that does work?…hhhhmmm

She was getting to the nub of it. And where’s Mr. Helpful rich01 (Geddit, rich one, Thatcherite-Raganomic gecko!) now? dissapeared, still at least his fix did change the order of the title block!!

wanzz on Feb 14, 2010, 7:31 am

yup… thanks for share about SEO

Paul Corcoran on Feb 14, 2010, 7:32 am

ok, enough is enough!

I really don’t care what your agenda is here, but if anyone cares to actually read the (original) article at the top of this page, you do get an idea about what it is supposed to do!

I have it loaded on my pages for better SEO. It may work, or it may not, I’ll let you know, asap.

A rant i can take, but a blustering buffoon who claims to hate arrogance, i cannot!

How about arrogance AND igrorance, twice the pleasure. (for you)

If you actually took the time to learn something, you’d be able to help people, instead i get the distinct feeling that you love an argument for the sake of argument.

I’ll leave it at that. That is unless you’d like the last word? ………………….Thought so.

Paul Corcoran on Feb 20, 2010, 1:32 pm

Hi Guys, I found out what was wrong with this,
when you drop it in to where you’re supposed to, you get an error message in Blogger saying your changes cannot be parsed.
I’ve dug a little deeper into this on warrior forum, where the big boys play (lol)
In the 1st line of code, ie;
The Qoute Marks ‘ and ‘ get lost in Copying and Pasting, adding these you can now drop it in where it tells you to in this article, save and there you go.

Paul Corcoran on Feb 20, 2010, 1:36 pm

cond=’data:blog.pageType == "index"’
Right lets try this again!
Where it says cond=blog a quote mark should be put BEFORE data and AFTER qout;
This works now i promise.

Paul
